August 26th 2009 Pick of the Week: BLACKEST NIGHT TITANS #1 (OF 3)

Blackest Night: Titans is easily the book I am most excited about that is coming out of the Blackest Night event, including Blackest Night. This book is going to be deeply disturbing. Like all of the other Blackest Night books, we will see the resurrection of loved ones super powered and otherwise, and the resulting emotional torture they inflict on the living. The titans, more than any other team, have had a ton of casualties (as a matter of fact the next issue, also released this week, has a cover of a coffin, one of many such covers to grace this book). As a result we are likely to see quite a few fallen titans as black lanterns, messing with the heads of their still living teammates and trying to steal their hearts (literally). Most exciting of all in this issue is the return of Terra, former Titan and drama queen...pain and destruction followed this chick everywhere in life, so take my word she's gonna be a terror in death.

More than the awesome story we're promised I am thrilled with the creative team on this book. I get a book with my one of my favorite writers, J.T. Krul, and one of my favorite artists, Ed Benes. It's very much a dream team for me, I'm sure they'll make magic together.

J.T. Krul is the master of words who has worked on my favorite book of all time, Soulfire, as well as Fathom (both titles from Aspen Comics) and you might remember the Joker's Asylum: Poison Ivy one-shot he did for DC Comics and the lead up to the Blackest Night: Titans mini-series, Titan's #15. What I really like about him as a writer is how rich his character development is. In one issue he can make you care deeply for someone who may be brand new to you.

This is part of the reason why I think he's the right person to re-introduce us to fallen titans or to welcome the new reader to their complexities.

The other great thing he does is transport you into the world of the comic, you will lose yourself in the descriptiveness and nuance of his writing in a way that leaves you dying for more.

Recently me and my friend Simon did an interview with J.T. about this very book as well as his upcoming work at Aspen, if you would like to hear that go here: http://comicimpact.com/2009/08/ep87-jt-krull/ and you can download the podcast, you can also find it on itunes for free it's episode 87 of Comic Impact.

As if that weren't enough to entice we have art by Ed Benes. I first came across his work on Birds of Prey (although you might know him from Supergirl or Justice League of America) and was immediately taken by how stunning it was. I know there is a lot more to art than how pretty it is, especially in comics great consideration should be taken, for instance, in an artists ability to tell a story, but honestly...it's just SO PRETTY. That's not to say that he lacks other qualities, I only mean to impress that it's probably worth the $2.99 this book costs just to have a series of panel-sized pictures from this guy. You're probably already picking up all the other Blackest Night titles so do yourself a favor and get your hands on this one too. check out the preview here

August 20th 2009 Pick of the Week: Batgirl #1

Barbara Gordon is my favorite character. I loved her as Batgirl, I love her as Oracle, and I'll always hold onto my foolish hope that she'll one day be Batgirl again. I SERIOUSLY doubt that will ever happen, but here's to hoping. I am writing this on the day the comic was released, I have gotten word that Batgirl has been revealed, but I can't read it until I write this out, so here we go.

I DO NOT thnk Barbara will be Batgirl, so there are only a few other options really. The popular choice for the reveal is Stephanie Brown (formerly Spoiler/Robin), along with a majority of fans, I think she is going to be the wearer of the cowl. I do have to credit my boss for that original idea, as far as I can tell he came up with that before anyone else, and as I recall he didn't really at the time have a reason for it, other than a hunch. At first I played around with the idea...I really wouldn't mind her as Batigrl. I like the character, she's pretty bad a**, and she's part iof the Bat Family allready, easy fit. Also, it JUST NOW occured to me that if we got Steph in that costume I could again have fun rooting for a Batgirl/Robin pairing (I love the Dick Grayson & Brabara Gordon pairing), allthough technically Tim is now Red Robin I've always hoped they could make it work. Here's why I think it's Steph. Go back to me with to issue 2 of Red Robin, which 2nd printed today by the way. Steph and Tim had another confrontaion about Steph's supposed betrayal and lying to Tim, blah blah blah, and he says "...I still can't trust you to wear that costume". pretty much I'm thinking Tim shamed her outta being Spoiler but she'll talk herself into Batgirl, maybe with the intent of a fresh start, prooving herslef and so on.

Other obvious options are Cassandra Caine (the most recent Batgirl) and Charlotte "Charlie" Gage-Radcliffe (Misfit). First, I don't think that it will be Cassie simply because it would be pretty stupid for them to make a huge reveal for the person who is currently Batgirl, OR at least really deceptive (kinda like when people say they are going to reveal certain red people's identity and don't...not cool!!!) . Also, I don't reeeeeally like Cassie as Batgirl...sorry. As for Charlie, well it's obvious right? For those of you who may not know Charlie was brought into the DCU during a "Birds of Prey" storyline with a mystery Batgirl on the loose, hmmmm, interesting.

The entire time they made it look an aweful lot like it was going to be the return of Babs as Batgirl, but those sneaky son-of-a-guns, psyched us out with Charlie. She was a fan of Batgirl, that wantef to be Batgirl so she made an adorably Ghetto costume. All in all it was kinda cute because it reminded me so much of Barbara's start as Batgirl, and Charlie is uber endearing. Long story short, she wante to be Batgirl, she's in with Batgirl, all together very possible, I just think again it's a little easy, we'll see.

Now, I'm gonna throw someone else in the mix. No one I have heard brought up, but there has been a lot of talk and obviously I haven't heard all of it. Last night I just randomly though of the idea of Cassie Sandsmark, Wonder Girl. Why could it be her? Let's go back again to the pages of Red Robin, this time issue 3. Tim and Cassie had a talk about Tim's suspicions about Batman being alive, among other things. Obviously Cassie is concerned about him and she want's to help him cope, what better way to keep tabs and be there that join the family? I know it's a strech, just a thought I randomly had, but that would also be pretty awesome. I like Cassie and again with the potention Batgirl (Red) Robin pairing I like those two together too, althought I like him a little better with Steph.

So, let's summarize and put it into numbers shall we? I think I am putting Steph at about an 80% chance, Charlie at 10%. Wondergirl at 5%, Barbara at 3 and Cassie Cane at 2%. We'll see but seriously pick this book up, I am SO excited. Batgirl is written by Bryan Q. Miller with Pencils by Lee Garbett. P.S. I just opened the issue to get those names and we allrady have a reveal, so no red person reveal shinanegans.

July 21st 2009 Pick of the Week Dellec # 1

Dellec is the name of the newest series to come out of Aspen Comics; it's alsothe name of the character we follow. Dellec is your basic tough silent type. He's got a chip on his shoulder and he wants to make others pay. Sounds like a gem right? Ok let me explain...

I DON'T get the impression from what I know of this series that Dellec is the Dexter-esque bad guy we are taught to root for. In fact, a lot of the early promotions for this book included the tag line "Sometimes evil should be afraid", again I doubt the evil that should be afraid is Dellec so lets assume he's going against the evil. In fact, the folks at Aspen have flat out said he is out to destroy evil and what created evil. Why is he doing all this? Answers to come in the pages of this book, Dellec's past will reveal itself as the series progresses and we'll come to know his motivation.

The really interesting thing about the premise of this book is that it pushes the reader out of their comfort zone and questions the norm. First of all, this title is gonna be chock full of philosophical queries. One of the main themes boasted of is the discussion of the nature of evil. Question's about it's conception, it's creator and ultimately about the blur between good and evil.

I think that's why they used a character like Dellec, to demonstrate that someone might at the same time fight against evil and not be entirely good. Another controversial idea the comic is suggesting seems to be the God is the creator of evil and potentially in fact evil. Please don't miss-read this, I don't find this in the slightest bit offensive, nor do I think many people will....I DO think that people will be forced to think about things they might never before have considered which gets me really excited about this story.

I think that comics as a medium has really evolved and the days of books that don't dig deep are falling behind. That's not to say that all comics need be deadly serious, just a bit more layered and clever in it's entertainment value. And then again this new age of comics also brings us stories such as these that really have merit outside great one-liners and awesome battle scenes.

Dellec is writtern by Frank Mastromauro and Vince Hernandez, with art by Micah Gunnell (pencils), Rob Stull (inks) and Matt Hollingsworth (colors). Take my word this is a killer creative team you won't be dissapointed. If all this wasn't enough to convince you to pick up this book let me throw in one more bit, this series will be brought to you at the low price of $2.50 a welcome relief now that more and more comics are turning up $3.99.

And now: Since I have your attention...As most of you know this weekend is San Diego Comic-Con 2009, it's a really exciting time for comics because companies make all sorts of big announcements and it's made more exciting by the presence of con-exclusives. For this week in correlation with my pick, I'd like to draw attention to the insanely awesome exclusives being offered by Aspen Comics this year, including 2 con-exclusive covers of Dellec #1. If you're going to be there I recommend getting down to Aspen Comics Booth #2321, and grabbing some while they last. Check out more info on these books here

July 15th 2009 Pick of the Week: TITANS #15

Titan's #15 is one of three books coming out this week that are part of the major event Blackest Night. The other two of course are Blackest Night #1 and Blackest Night Tales of the Corps #1. Those two are also definitely worth a read.

This issue is going to do two very cool very important things. First it's going to bring back Tempest.  For those of you who don't know Tempest (Garth) is the hero formally known as Aqualad, teen partner to Aquaman.  He's a really great character that a lot of truly unfortunate stuff happens to. He's one of DC's favorite take-him-out-and-torture-him characters, which makes for excellent often heart-wrenching story.Whether you know a lot about Garth or not this is sure to be a epic return, and is promised to have a final page that will get the masses talking. Secondly, this issue is the prelude to another book I am dying to get my hands on, a mini-series called Titans: Blackest Night. More on that down the road, but it's going to be one of the exceptional tie-in books to what is expected to be a memorable event. Geoff Johns gets a high-five from me for being the mastermind behind Blackest Night
.

But let's not forget another great reason to pick up this book, the creative team.  This issue as well as the previously mentioned mini-series to come is going to be written by J.T Krul, with art by Ed Benes.  Have you ever wondered what it would be like if one of your favorite writers and one of your favorite artists teamed up to bring back one of your favorite characters?  I'm about to find out.

J.T. Krul is the master of words who has worked on my favorite book of all time, Soulfire, as well as Fathom (both titles from Aspen Comics) and you might remember the Joker's Asylum: Poison Ivy one-shot he did for DC Comics.  What I really like about him as a writer is how rich his character development is.  In one issue he can make you care deeply for someone who may be brand new to you. This is part of the reason why I think he's the right person to re-introduce us to Garth or to welcome the new reader to his complexities. The other great thing he does is transport you into the world of the comic, you will lose yourself in the descriptiveness and nuance of his writing in a way that leaves  you dying for more.

You're probably already picking up the other two Blackest Night titles why not get your hands on this one too.

Correction: Second week in a row!! DC comics named Ed Benes as the artist for this book when in fact it is Jose Luis. No oversell, the art is gorgeous regardless of the mix-up. I do however know that the Titans: Blackest Night series is J.T. Krul and Ed Benes. Sorry for the miss-information.

July 7th 2009 Pick of the Week: MS MARVEL #41 DKR

Since the start of the series Ms. Marvel has been a really good book. It's one of the books that has been very regularly well-done, the writing and the art have been consistent, and who doesn't like Carol Danvers, I mean really? Ms. Marvel is a great character.

Here's what's happening now. Issue 37 of Ms. Marvel ended with the "death" of Carol Danvers via power overload and explosion. You know by now that I almost always skeptical of comic book deaths, as you should all be. In this case though I have particular issues. First of all, the cover of this month's Ms. Marvel 41 shows Carol Danvers which means she might be back from the dead a short 4 issues after the fact. Also, I have been pretty annoyed about continuity. Marvel is usually very good about keeping their comics on the same page, but the entire time Carol has been dead she's been on missions with the New Avengers, consider me bothered. Ok, end rant on that point.

So back to the the "death". After Carol was off the scene, Norman Osbourn's Ms. Marvel, Karla Sofen, the former Thunderbolt Moonstone has taken over as the title character of this series. This was a RISKY move on Marvel's part. Putting a super villain "turned good"(which she hasn't, I mean she's on Norman's DARK Avengers after all) as the title character in an established series is something I certainly didn't expect, let alone expect to like, but...I...did. I like that she knows she's a bad guy doing good, I like that she is playing the people, i like that she's a hero who isn't afraid to kill and mostly i like that she's more that a little crazy. Karla definitely has her hang-ups, and I think it's really entertaining.

So what could be better than all of this? Well, let me tell you. First of all, as of issue 40 joining writer Brian Reed is penciller Sana Takeda. Takeda first made his impact on me when he penciled the mini-series Soulfire: Shadow Magic, which came out of Aspen comics. He seems to have come out of nowhere and now is on a major Marvel title, i couldn't be happier to see him get more work. If nothing else I've said has interested you, check out that cover!

And then, there are the guest characters in this story. The marvel website promises in issues 41 and 42: Deadpool, "the New Avengers and...someone we can't tell you about! " So that means we'll get some Wolverine and Spider-Man at the least, a surprise guest (no idea who) and DEADPOOL. Ok, so the only thing more exciting than a great writer getting a crack at Deadpool is that this book is gonna set him against someone like Karla. What we have here is the story of 2 crazy people who really like to kill, how can this NOT be fun?? C'mon, you know you want to....

Correction: The penciler for this issue is Sergio Arino, the Marvel website erroneously named Takeda as the penciler. As for the effect of this news on my pick, I still think it was a great issue and allthough I prefer Takeda's work, Arino's stuff is still worth a look.

June 30th 2009 Pick of the Week: Captain America: Reborn #1 of 5

Why am I excited about this book? Be serious! I love Steve Rogers and I cannot wait to have him back! Ok...enough exclamation marks. Roughly 2 years ago, in Captain America #25, Steve Rogers was shot and killed outside of a courthouse. Why was he killed? Because Marvel promised us a major death coming out of Civil War. I really think that's why, I don't think the character needed to die, I think they just wanted to shake things up and when push came to shove Captain America or Iron Man had to die. Ok, fine, I've made my peace with the decision. After news broke out of his death, comic fans began to debate, as often is the case, how long he would stay dead.

Wait no more, Steve Rogers will be making his comeback this Wednesday July 1st, perfectly timed near the fourth of July (well played Marvel) in Captain America: Reborn. As far as I can tell, the resurrection of Steve is going to be just that, a resurrection. it seems that he was actually dead, but there may be a loophole, I may be wrong on that but I guess we'll find out real soon. And of course there is a bit of controversy behind bringing him back. While Steve was away, his former sidekick Bucky stepped up and became the new Captain America. To the surprise of many, Bucky really held his own and to many reader he really has become their Captain America. Now I won't pretend that I'm not a Bucky fan, I think he's great, and I think these last two years have made for some great story, thank you Ed Brubaker. BUT, and there is a but, Steve Rogers will always be my Cap, just like Barbara Gordon will always be my Batgirl. Is it because he's the one I am most used to? Maybe, but in any event I like him better and he's definitely a worth-while character.

So a lot of people are worried that bringing back Steve will de-Cap Bucky. To these people let me make a couple of points: First, Bucky had a good run, he's been there for a while now and he had his time. Second, bringing Steve back does not necessitate getting rid of Bucky as Captain America. We know virtually nothing about the circumstances and the state of mind he might have. There is no reason to believe he would immediately if ever return to being Captain America, or that he'll even be a good guy. I think people are jumping the gun a bit in worrying about Bucky, Steve could come back and completely revamp, be someone we haven't even heard of before, stranger things have happened. Also, Bucky not being Cap doesn't remove Bucky from the comics scene, he was a great character before, maybe now he'll get more attention.

So, my point with all this. There's a lot of drama that's gonna go down, and writer Ed Brubaker has yet to disappoint me with his treatment of Steve Rogers, you know, aside from killing him. Check it out, it's gonna be worth your money. Wait....before I go...you should know...there are a ridiculous amount of great books coming out this week, and I can't just ignore them so let's call my sub-pick-of-the-weeks: Soulfire #10, Deadpool Merc With A Mouth #1 & Star Wars: Invasion #1, seriously I am so excited about these as well, if you want to know more about these or any of the titles u can email me at galaxyofcomicsemail@yahoo.com, or come by the store on Wednesday after 3pm, I'll be the dork with the shield photos will be on line Thursday.

June 24th 2009 Pick of the Week: RUNAWAYS #11

Runaways is one of Marvel Comics most wonderful and under-appreciated series. It's the Pushing Daisies of comics...I mean, until Pushing Daisies comes out. It seems that no matter how well written or fantastically drawn, young super-heroes like the Runaways and Young Avengers have a tough time being taken seriously by the common comic book fan. Also, like Pushing Daisies it is critically acclaimed, loved by it's particular group of fans, and not the highest in the numbers game.

So here's the scoop about the past of this series: We are currently on Volume 3. Volume 1 & 2 were considered a great success within the limitations of being a "side-kick book", Brian K. Vaughn and Joss Whedon gave us a whole lot of awesome story. Volume 3, some would say, hit a bit of a rough patch. Since the start of the new volume Runaways has gotten mixed reviews from fans who think that Terry Moore (writer) and Humberto Ramos (penciler) are not particularly suited for this book or these characters. Do I think that's true? No, I would have to disagree, I think that folks got used to a certain look and tone that the book had and are just tweaked by the change, I personally love both of these guys, and i think they did a bang up job on this book.

And now for the point. Runaways #11 marks the start of a new creative team taking over the book, Kathryn Immonen (writer) and Sara Pichelli (art). This is a great hopping on point for new readers, and a chance for old readers disenchanted by the latest run, to give the book another chance. What's the book about? Teens with superpowers trying to make it on there own after they took down there super villain parents at the start of the series.....pretty much. Good news is, Marvel always includes those handy "previously" pages, so that will catch you up on what you need to know. Bottom line: give this series a chance it's gonna surprise you.

June 16th 2009 Pick of the week Executive Assistant Iris #1

Everyone knows that I love Aspen Comics. I can't help it, their comics are truly something different than others out there. They bring in top writers and artist and produce entertaining and often soul-stirring comics dealing with relatable characters in seriously fantastic circumstances. Executive Assistant Iris is a great example of a fresh new series that would only come out of smaller publishers such as Aspen.

As some of you may know I started my pick of the weeks a while ago before actually typing them out here. I did so for the express purpose of alerting customers to comics that are worth their time, that they might not have otherwise considered. Here it is, a new series you should take notice of!!

Executive Assistant Iris, is based on the real life position held by some Chinese women in the 1970s/1980s in which they acted as assistants and assassins for high-level businessmen. Iris is one such woman who was trained to be a devoted helper to her "master" in any capacity needed.

Do I really need to sell you on this? Super hot assassin who alternates between sexy secretary outfits and skin-tight leather...and she has swords.

Executive Assistant Iris is created by David Wohl, Brad Foxhoven & Michael Turner written by David Wohl with art by Eduardo Francisco. You can find out more about this title on the Aspen Comics website

June 8th 2009 Pick of the Week: RED ROBIN #1

I've made it no secret that I believe DC comics as a whole has been disappointing as of late. With the exception of such shining lights as Green Lantern (and really anything Geoff Johns touches) and the Bat-titles, there is little in the way of good to come out of the seemingly perma-number-two company. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of many DC characters and creative teams, I just think they are going through a rough patch, and as a matter of fact I am hoping the relaunch of the Bat titles and "Blackest Night" will result in a resurgence. End precursor.

That being said, I think it's an interesting move on DC's part to launch a new title with talent that came out of Marvel books. Red Robin, is a new on-going series written by Christopher Yost, best known for his work on X-Men titles (New X-Men, X-Force) with art by Ramon Bachs (Civil War: Front Line). The character Red Robin has been many different people too complicated to explain here, check wikipedia. I for one am super-excited about this book.

Other than the creative team, there's not much we know about the contents of this book. DC has been very vague about the identities of the shuffled about characters in the Bat Family and has been rather tight lipped about letting story points that could reveal anything at all slip. Here's what we do know: someone is Red Robin (let's be serious though we all know it's Tim Drake, it's gotta be) , and said someone, doesn't believe Bruce Wayne is dead so he's gonna find him. Yea...it's Tim. Here's where the theories start to fly. The difference in the muscle size between Red Robin and Tim Drake when last we saw him is too great to dismiss. Some fans theorize that while it has to be Tim behind the mask it may be a different universe or back from the future Tim Drake....

I honestly don't know what to expect but I am definitely curious. Pick it up, even it it's only for the pretty Francis Manapul cover, that's a good enough reason.

June 1st 2009 Batman and Robin #1

Hey fans of Galaxy of Comics we are working on are new web site so part of the site will not be working at 1000 % till this Wednesday for new comic book day yet you still can check out what’s coming out this week in the world of comics.

We hope you enjoy the new design of our site. Also here Dana’s first PICK OF THE WEEK

Pick of the Week: BATMAN AND ROBIN #1

Holy Awesome Team-Up! Since the first Batman and Robin team-up, the dynamic duo have been about unlikely pairings brought together by a common bond and/or Bruce Wayne's hero complex. The sullen, level-headed Batman takes on a youthful and impetuous Robin. "Batman & Robin" couples Dick Grayson the first Robin and Damian Wayne the son of Bruce Wayne. Not to pick favorites but Dick Grayson is a well-developed overall kind-hearted character, while Damian Wayne is a one-demensional brat.

The good news is, that now Batman's "death" (yea, I put it in quotes) will pair these truly incompatible allies in a scenario which places the formerly wise-cracking Dick as the Dark Knight and Damian as a careless Robin who needs to learn a thing or too, much like the equally obnoxious Jason Todd did.

Maybe Damian will die too? We can only hope, but until then the surely tense relationship between the two will likely make for some good storytelling, especially coming from the reunited most-of-the-time excellent writer Grant Morrison and the infallible Frank Quitely who previously worked together on instant classics such as "All-Star Superman" and "We3".
